Begin Rehab in Nashville
We know finding treatment is overwhelming. We’re here to guide you through the process.
At 6:45 on a weekday morning, I-565 is already thick with cars headed for Redstone Arsenal and Cummings Research Park. Somewhere in that line is a person who has not told anyone that the first thing they did today was drink enough to stop their hands shaking. Or a person who took two pills from a bottle that ran out a week ago and replaced it with something bought in a parking lot. A lot of people in Huntsville’s engineering, contracting, and shift jobs have gotten good at keeping a problem out of sight.
Music City Detox runs medical detox and residential treatment from 370 Cumberland Way in Madison, Tennessee, a few miles north of downtown Nashville. Alabama residents are a regular part of who arrives. Statewide figures and the rest of Alabama are covered under detox for Alabama residents. The focus here is Huntsville and the towns within an hour of it.
The name trips people up. The city of Madison, Alabama, sits just west of Huntsville along I-565, near the airport. Music City Detox is in Madison, Tennessee, a Nashville neighborhood about 120 miles north. If someone in Madison, Alabama, searches for detox in Madison, they will find us, and we are still a two-hour drive away.
The route is simple. From downtown Huntsville or Madison, take I-565 west to I-65, then head north. The interstate crosses into Tennessee near Ardmore and runs through Giles and Maury counties toward Nashville. From there, Briley Parkway carries you around the east side of the city to Gallatin Pike, and the facility is a few minutes from the Rivergate exits. Plan on about two hours from Huntsville, and closer to two and a half if Nashville traffic is bad. Some families prefer US-231 north through Fayetteville and Shelbyville, which takes about as long.
That distance is useful. It is close enough that a spouse can drive up for a family session on a Saturday and be home for dinner. It is also far enough to take a person out of the routine that kept the substance in reach, from the friend who always has something to the package store on the way home from work.
Alabama’s 2025 drug threat assessment, published by the Alabama Department of Public Health, includes figures from the state’s mental health system and from state drug agents. Madison County shows up in both.
In 2023, Madison County recorded 1,737 treatment admissions for addiction, the second-highest count in Alabama behind Jefferson County at 2,796. That number includes alcohol and every other substance, and it partly reflects population. It also means a great many Huntsville families have already stood where yours is standing now.
The same report lists the counties where state agents seized the most of each drug in 2023. Madison County was one of the top two for both methamphetamine and fentanyl, alongside Jefferson, and one of the top two for cocaine. Seizures track trafficking routes as much as local use, and I-565 ties the county straight into I-65. Still, it points to the mix a detox team in this region has to be ready for. Methamphetamine and fentanyl together are a common pairing, and a person stopping both faces a heavy stimulant crash on top of opioid withdrawal.
These towns get grouped together as north Alabama, but the drive and the situation differ from one to the next.
Decatur sits on the Tennessee River west of Huntsville, a river and manufacturing town where a lot of people work shifts. From Decatur, the fastest route is north on US-31 or I-65, past Athens and into Tennessee. Plan on two hours or a little more. Morgan County also shows up in the state’s 2023 seizure data, as one of the top two counties for marijuana. For many families here, the question on the table is alcohol or pills, and whether stopping can be done safely at home. For heavy daily drinking, the answer is usually no.
Athens is the closest of the group, sitting right on I-65 with nothing between it and Tennessee but Elkmont and the state line. It is about two hours to Madison, Tennessee, with no city driving until Nashville. Plenty of families here commute east into Research Park or the Arsenal every day, so the interstate is already part of the routine. For Athens, getting to the unit is one road the whole way.
The Shoals are the farthest of these towns, roughly two and a half hours away. Most people head north on US-43 through Lawrenceburg and Columbia, then pick up I-65 toward Nashville. The Shoals and Nashville have traded musicians for decades, since the studios in Muscle Shoals made the area a recording destination. In the state’s 2023 seizure data, Colbert County was one of the top two counties for heroin, alongside Jefferson. Heroin withdrawal is miserable more often than it is deadly, but the risk comes afterward: a person whose tolerance has dropped can overdose on a dose they once handled.
Detox is the medical management of withdrawal, the body’s reaction when a substance it depends on is removed. On the unit, nurses are on the floor through the night, which matters because alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal often turn worse in the late hours. What the team watches for depends on what a person has been using.
Comfort medications ease nausea, aches, and sleeplessness. For opioid or alcohol use disorder, medication-assisted treatment may involve Suboxone, Sublocade, Vivitrol, or naltrexone, and whether any of them fits is a call the medical team makes person by person.
Detox is a planned admission. Some nights cannot wait for a plan. If someone is having a seizure, is confused or seeing things, has chest pain, or is breathing slowly after using, call 911. That is an emergency room situation, and detox comes once they are stable.
For a mental health or substance use crisis that is not a medical emergency, Huntsville has resources close to home. The Alabama Department of Mental Health lists WellStone Emergency Services on Memorial Parkway SW as the crisis center serving Madison, Limestone, and Morgan counties, among others. Calls to 988 from Alabama are answered by in-state centers, and one of them is in Huntsville at WellStone. If someone talks about wanting to die, call or text 988.
Network status follows the insurance plan, not the state you live in. Music City Detox is in-network with Aetna, including Meritain, Banner Health, Coventry Health Care, First Health Group, Innovation Health, and Sutter Health. It is also in-network with Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna including Cigna Allegiance, Optum and United Behavioral Health (UBH), except Affordable Care Act Marketplace plans, and TRICARE East Select and Prime.
One plan needs a specific mention. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is not on Music City Detox’s in-network list. It is the card many north Alabama families carry, so it is the first thing admissions checks. The team will tell you what your plan would and would not pay before anyone packs a bag, and what detox costs if coverage falls short.
For households tied to Redstone Arsenal, TRICARE East Select and Prime are in-network here. Referral and authorization rules differ by plan and by whether the beneficiary is active duty, so admissions confirms what applies. There is more on TRICARE coverage for rehab. Federal parity rules also require most plans that cover substance use treatment to handle it on terms comparable to medical care.
Detox clears the substance over days. The reasons someone started leaning on a substance are still there when it ends. That is why detox at Music City Detox leads straight into residential treatment on the same campus, where the work turns to therapy, a daily routine, and the reasons the substance took hold.
Often that includes depression, anxiety, or trauma. Dual diagnosis care treats those alongside the substance use. Family therapy gives a spouse or parent from Huntsville or Decatur a place in the process too. And because home is in another state, aftercare planning starts early, lining up outpatient care, meetings, and a prescriber near home before the drive back down I-65.
At Music City Detox, our team of addiction experts in Nashville specialize in dual diagnosis treatment and premier detox services. We’re committed to helping each client find their own path to recovery.
Most calls from north Alabama start with practical questions, like how far it is or whether insurance will cover it, and then turn to whether things have gotten bad enough to need this. A short conversation with our admissions team can answer that, check coverage, including Blue Cross of Alabama and TRICARE, and explain what the first day looks like. The call can come from the person who needs care or the person who has been watching it happen at home. Start with the Music City Detox admissions page. If someone is in danger right now, call 911, or call or text 988.
It usually starts sideways. Somebody calls to ask what this costs, or how long it takes, or whether a person can keep a job while they do it. About ten minutes in, the real question comes out: is it this bad, and is it too late? Usually the answer to both is no.
Through the Music City Detox admissions team you can get benefits verified, hear what an arrival involves, and get a straight answer about whether this is the right level of care or whether something closer to Birmingham or Mobile fits better.
Nobody has to be the patient to be the one who calls, and asking sets nothing in motion. If today is not the day, none of this expires; come back to it when it is. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911, and 988 reaches the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by call or text from anywhere in Alabama.

No. The facility is at 370 Cumberland Way in Madison, Tennessee, a neighborhood on the north side of Nashville. It shares a name with the city of Madison, Alabama, west of Huntsville, which confuses a lot of searches. From Madison, Alabama, it is about two hours north: I-565 west to I-65, then north into Tennessee and around Nashville on Briley Parkway to Gallatin Pike.
About two hours from Huntsville, Madison, and Athens, mostly on I-65. Decatur runs two hours or a little more. Florence and Muscle Shoals are roughly two and a half hours, usually north on US-43 through Lawrenceburg and Columbia before joining I-65. Nashville traffic can add time, so families often plan to arrive mid-morning. Admissions sets an arrival time when the admission is scheduled.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is not on Music City Detox’s in-network list, so it is the first plan admissions checks for Alabama families. Some plans include out-of-network benefits and some do not. The team will tell you what your plan would pay, what you would owe, and what the private-pay option looks like before anything is scheduled. If you carry Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Optum outside a Marketplace plan, or TRICARE East, those are in-network here.
Music City Detox is in-network with TRICARE East, both Select and Prime, and TRICARE lists substance use disorder treatment as a covered service. Rules on referrals and prior authorization differ by plan and by whether the beneficiary is active duty, a family member, or a retiree. Admissions confirms which rules apply to your situation before the admission is scheduled.
